Army’s 75 Ranger Regiment & the Rifleman Radio

The 75th Ranger Regiment, a rapidly deployable strike force, is the largest special operations combat element in the U.S. Army.  The 75th Ranger Regiment has been continuously deployed in support of the War on Terror since October 2001. So it makes sense to have this Ranger regiment conduct operational assessments on the JTRS HMS Rifleman Radio.

Meeting some of the team at AUSA, we have been working on an alternative CJ speaker-microphone as a possible replacement for the current issued audio accessory used with the Rifleman HMS. It seems that the audio device chosen to be the radio accessory that comes with the PRC-154 is the lapel speaker-microphone. Ease of use and more over cost factors for the initial audio accessory are high factors that make the speaker-microphone the product of choice.  Easy to use, as well as offering excellent voice communication and cost effective enough to be replaced by the soldiers audio of choice. An added feature offered by CJ is an external clear tube earphone for quiet listening.

The Rangers are equipped with the Rifleman Radio for intra-squad communications and with the GD300, running the Tactical Ground Reporting (TIGR) tactical ‘app,’ to send text messages, situation reports and other information to individual solders. Feedback from planned operational assessments will be used to inform the future fielding of the Rifleman Radio to the Army as a whole.

This capability provides unprecedented communication and situational awareness that changes how soldiers fight,” said Chris Brady, vice president of Assured Communications for General Dynamics C4 Systems. “The JTRS HMS Rifleman Radio is ready for combat and could reduce the military’s dependence on interim radio solutions that are unable to deliver anything like this.”

There were three evaluations held in 2011. As the process continues with the Rifleman HMS, we look forward to supporting the system with initial and audio of choice options for years to come.
